In this project I show you a unique way to decorate your pumpkins or house for Halloween this year. I painted my pumpkins with glow in the dark paint and drew pictures on them using black lights and lasers. You are sure to impress your trick or treaters this year with this DIY crafting project.

I started out by using some brush on glow in the dark paint, but quickly found out that it is splotchy and runs down the seams of the pumpkins. The effect works well enough but it’s not idea. Instead I switched to the spray paint version and had much more success. After working with the pumpkins, I applied the paint to a 6’x9’ canvas drop cloth. I had my neighbor Maggie help me with this project. She cut out stencils of spooky things using card stock paper. She taped them onto the pumpkins (or just held them up in most cases) and exposed the paint to an ultraviolet (blacklight) flashlight. We used a couple of different sizes of flashlights to get get broad brushstrokes. For a fine bright stroke, we used a 405nm laser pointer. The longer the UV light is exposed the brighter and longer the effect lasts. We were seeing the patterns last anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. This is a fun project that could be done with the family.
